The merit of the automatic transmission is that the transition from the Otto duty cycle to the ignition compression cycle (Spark Controlled Compression Ignition calls it Mazda) occurs without noticeable changes in engine behavior. In the case of the manual transmission on the Mazda 3, the passage was marked by slight non-linearity, which is easy to notice when going from constant speed to energetic acceleration.
